Keukenhof Flower Gardens

Tulips are blooming, celebrating the arrival of spring and reminding us of the amazing opportunity awaiting travelers next season, as EarthBound gardeners set out to enjoy the unparalleled bulb displays of The Netherlands. Tulip season in Holland extends from the end of March to mid-May, but we will arrive just in time for peak tulip season in mid-April. In addition to the amazing displays at gardens, tulips transform the countryside into a colorful patchwork. As we travel from one destination to another, we will find beautiful views waiting no matter where we look.

Perhaps the best place to view a grand assortment of tulips is at Keukenhof Gardens, which is planted with over 7 million bulbs representing 800 tulip varieties. Each year, tulip season brings special events and exhibitions to the pavilions on site. You will learn process of tulip production as well as plenty of cultivation tips, and see the rich history of the Netherland’s tulip industry bloom before your eyes in the Historical Garden. There plantings tell the development of 400 years of tulip growth and cultivation in the Netherlands, including varieties that have been planted for over 400 years.

Keukenhof is the world’s largest flower garden. The name means “kitchen garden’, referencing the gardens origins as hunting and food-gathering grounds for Teylingen Castle. The catle gardens were redesigned in 1857 by landscape architects Jan David Zocher and his son Louis Paul Zocher. They created the structure still seen throughout the grounds today, an English landscape with winding paths and unexpected views. It was not until 1950 that Keukenhof opened to the public as an exhibition for spring-blooming bulbs.

In addition to tulips, Keukenhof houses numerous theme gardens offering beauty and inspiration.
